If you were expecting a massive AAA God of War sequel, adjust your expectations — but don’t dismiss this one. God of War: Sons of Sparta shadow-dropped on February 12, 2026 during a PlayStation State of Play, and it’s a very different kind of God of War game.
A 2D Retro Prequel
Sons of Sparta is a 2D pixel-art action platformer developed by Mega Cat Studios in collaboration with Santa Monica Studio. It’s the 10th installment in the franchise and the first chronologically — set during Kratos’ youth at the Agoge, the brutal Spartan military training program.
Players follow Kratos and his brother Deimos as they traverse the region of Laconia surrounding Sparta. The story was written by the same team behind God of War (2018), Ragnarok, and Ragnarok: Valhalla — so the narrative pedigree is legitimate despite the retro presentation.
Pricing and What’s Included
- Standard Edition — $29.99
- Digital Deluxe Edition — $39.99: Includes digital artbook, soundtrack, PSN avatar, and four in-game items
It’s a PS5 exclusive and digital-only — no physical edition.
Mixed Reception
Reviews have been divisive. Metacritic sits at 68/100, while OpenCritic’s approval rate is just 29%. As a $30 retro spin-off, some critics appreciate the nostalgic approach, but others find it underwhelming for the God of War brand. The consensus: temper your expectations, and you might enjoy it as a bite-sized side story.
The Real News: Greek Trilogy Remake Confirmed
The bigger announcement from the same State of Play? Sony confirmed a God of War Greek Trilogy Remake is in development at Santa Monica Studio — a full remake of the original Greek-era trilogy. No release date yet, but this is the “big” God of War project fans have been waiting for. Sons of Sparta is a warm-up act, and the main event is coming.
