How Safe Codes Work in Resident Evil
If you are new to the series or need a refresher, here is how safe codes and puzzles work in Resident Evil games:
- Safe codes are fixed. Unlike some games with randomized codes, Resident Evil safe combinations are the same for every player on every playthrough. Once you know the code, you can enter it immediately without finding the clue first.
- Clues are nearby. Capcom always places the hint for a safe or lock within the same general area. Check notes, photos, posters, and environmental details in surrounding rooms.
- Dial safes require you to rotate left and right to specific numbers, similar to a real combination lock. Input direction matters.
- Padlocks typically use 3-4 digit numeric codes. Enter them in order.
- Puzzles range from simple symbol-matching to multi-step environmental puzzles involving item placement, light direction, or clock mechanisms.
Tips for Solving RE Requiem Puzzles on Your Own
If you prefer to solve puzzles yourself but want a nudge in the right direction:
- Read every note and file you find. RE games hide puzzle solutions in documents. If you picked up a note about “the clock tower striking at dawn,” the answer involves a time or clock-related input.
- Examine items in your inventory. Press the examine button to rotate key items. Codes are often written on the back or underside of objects.
- Check your map. RE Requiem’s map (like RE4 Remake) marks rooms with items remaining. If a room shows items uncollected, you probably missed a puzzle.
- Use Photo Mode. If a clue is a faded inscription or distant image, Photo Mode lets you zoom in for a clearer look.
- Play on Assisted difficulty if puzzles frustrate you. RE games typically provide more generous hints on easier difficulties.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are safe codes randomized in RE Requiem?
No. Based on every previous RE Engine title, safe codes are fixed and identical for all players. You can enter codes from this guide without finding the in-game clue first.
Can I miss a safe or puzzle?
In previous RE games, some safes become inaccessible after progressing past certain story points. We will note any missable safes in this guide once confirmed.
Do safes change on New Game Plus?
In RE4 Remake and RE Village, safe codes remained the same in NG+. We expect the same for RE Requiem and will confirm after launch.
